“What Supplements Do You Take?” (And Why I Usually Say: None)

As a personal trainer, I get asked this question all the time:

“What protein do you take?”“What supplements are you using?”

And people are usually surprised when I tell them:I don’t take any.

Not because I’m against them in theory—but because I don’t need them. And chances are, neither do you.


Here’s the truth: Protein comes from food!  So do vitamins, minerals, and the nutrients your body thrives on. If I have to choose between real food or a shake, pill, or powder… I’m choosing real food every single time.

A diet rich in high-quality protein, complex carbs, healthy fats, and essential nutrients will beat a supplement routine every day of the week. No powder can compete with well-balanced meals that fuel your body for performance and recovery.


But here’s the other half of the equation:

There’s no substitute for hard work.


It’s easy to eat a ton of calories and lift heavy if your only goal is to get strong….fat, but strong. Balance, however, is where the real challenge is. It takes discipline to align your intake with your output. To be intentional about what you eat and how you train.


Because your food is your fuel. And it’s meant to be used—not just stored.

So ask yourself:


• Are you eating enough?

• Are you eating too much?

• Are your meals supporting your goals—or just satisfying cravings?


One of the most honest, self-revealing experiences you can have is holding yourself accountable for the activity you do and the food you put in your body. Not just sometimes—consistently.


Are you ready to turn intention into action?
